Joel was born and raised in rural South Carolina and transplanted to Texas after graduating High School. In Texas he attended Texas A&M University receiving a Bachelor’s in Health Education, then the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston where he received his Bachelor’s in Physical Therapy. That began a 25-year quest to learn all that he could in the field of Orthopedic/Sports and Neurological physical therapy. Joel has dedicated himself to patient care and a pursuit of excellence in “hands on” based treatment techniques. Over the course of his career he has studied many forms of Eastern and Western manual therapy philosophies and has been mentored by some of the most respected PT’s and D.O.’s in the country.
In the past 19 years, Joel has fused his manual skills with another form of bodywork known as Myofascial Release (MFR). Together with his wife Suzanne Richey, Joel studied and trained with world-renowned lecturer and developer of the MFR approach, John Barnes,PT. Both he and his wife are recognized highlevel practitioners of MFR and are instructors of MFR courses for John Barnes.
Joel is a dedicated, caring, and loving professional who puts forth all that he is into every treatment. He opened the LJPTC in 1988 and continues to practice while remaining vigilant in his efforts to learn even more about the treatment of the human body. He loves spending time with his family, loves outdoor sports and recreation, and pursues his own health/fitness through Martial Arts and strength training. Joel has also become certified as a yoga instructor and has been teaching yoga at Sol Yoga in La Jolla for the past year.
Suzanne Richey has been a PTA since 1983 and graduated from San Diego Mesa College with an AS in Physical Therapist Assistant degree. Suzanne has been practicing Myofascial Release (MFR) soon after become a PTA and is now an assistant instructor for John Barnes MFR seminars and is considered an Expert Myofascial Release Practitioner specializing in Women’s Health. She has an intuitive touch when working with her patients and her healing hands guide all that she does. Suzanne’s belief of the body being a whole interconnected web, not just pieces and parts, allows her to resolve long standing pain and bring back smiles to her patients. She is always smiling and loves to bring the silly out of everyone. When she’s not treating patients she is a busy mother of two daughters and grandmother twice over as well. She takes yoga frequently, having introduce Joel to it’s benefits, and really enjoys taking his classes. She is a regular volunteer at TERI, Inc. treating the horses of their equine therapy for kids program.
Audra Moore is the Office Manager, but more importantly Joel and Suzanne’s oldest daughter. Audra graduated from San Diego State University in 2003 with a BA in Kinesiology, Pre-Physical Therapy. It was after graduating she decided she did not want to be a physical therapist and preferred the business aspect behind it all. Audra loves spending time with her husband and 2 kids while not at work!
